My Thoughts on Metropolis

A mediator is someone or something who helps a form of conflict turn into an agreement. In the film "Metropolis", the mediator is indefinitely the character "Freder", since he is the one who bonds the likeliness of the upper class and lower class. At the end of the film, Freder joins the hands of his father, Fredersen, and Grot (who controls the heart-machine in the lower class), symbolizing that the two sides don't have to live in segregation. Freder shows the two what he had learned living in the lower class; That the people there are the same as the people in the upper class. All they wanted is to live a good life in their beautiful city. If Freder had never met Maria, he would never have been able to understand and help mediate his normal class and the lower one.

Fritz Lang is trying to influence his audience in the best way possible. As he shows in Freder's character, Lang is trying his best to show his audience that two different types of people don't have to live in segregation (no matter what) because, at the end of the day, we are all people. We all bleed and cry, we all digest the same way and have similar emotions. We're only called different from each other because of the perspective we leave in other people's eyes. Lang influences us by advocating for the economic term "Communism". Communism is basically what this whole movie is trying to show; That two sides of the same stick don't have to be in a forever war with each other just because either one side, or both, believe that the other isn't equal to them. The upper class doesn't believe the lower class should be as privileged as them, and the lower class doesn't believe the upper class should have the privilege they do. Though Fritz Lang wants his audience to know that they don't need to live in segregation.

Films like the "Star Wars" franchise and "Star Trek" (and others that have futuristic elements) are influenced by how the film uses technology to its advantage. For example, in Star Wars, one of the characters, C-3PO's, was most likely influenced by Rotwang's android creation (which he created to look like Maria). Many movies, like Blaze Runner and Dark City, use Metropolis's style for a futuristic city look. Tim Burton was even influenced by the film since most of his work has been recognized to fit in with the whole "German Expressionism" aesthetic (as you could call it). Overall, the film was quite big when it was first released, and is now a huge reason to why so many filmmakers are able to create such "ahead of our time" kind-of movies.
