Montage Summary

Montage can be used to move a story along in a film or to persuade the audience to think a certain way, which can either leave a positive or negative effect on the audience. Directors intend to use montages as a way to quickly continue a character's story or to get a specific message across.

Montages used for persuasive purposes are intentionally shown to create an overall opinionated idea that the director wants his/her audience to believe. While some montages are used to convince a certain group one idea is correct, many filmmakers use montages to quickly pace a story in the film they are making. These montages, in particular, can leave emotional effects on the audience that may leave a viewer frustrated or excited for a certain character. It all depends on the intention of the director, and if he/she wants their audience to feel a certain way, or if they want to bring a message to the eyes of their willing viewers.
